Entering Cuttable Products on Orders

Product cutting allows you to manage products in your warehouse that require cutting prior to delivering to customers, such as wire or pipe.

The system checks for remnants based on your inventory allocation parameters. For example, a customer places an order for 10 lengths of 25 foot wire. You purchase the wire in 200 foot lengths and store them in the warehouse. The system checks the warehouse and finds two lengths of wire at 40 feet left over from another product cut in two lots and different locations. The system picks the first cut from the first 40 foot length and the second cut from the second 40 foot length, and then continues to get the rest of the order from a 200 foot length.

There are two options to handle cut products. You can auto-process orders and bypass using the Cut Product Queue. Or you can process orders using the Cut Product Queue and manage the products to cut, assign cutters, and change the cut product steps manually.

ClosedAbout Control Maintenance Records

Consider the following control maintenance records for cut products when adding them to orders:

For more information about managing remnant locations, see Assigning Products a Remnant Location Status in the Warehouse documentation. Depending on your setup, you may need to adjust this Inventory Allocation Methodcontrol maintenance record to make sure the system selects the right location types.

To enter a cuttable product on an order:

  1. Create a sales order on which you want to add a cuttable product.

  2. In the Qty/Unit and Product Description fields, enter the product that needs to be cut and the amount of the product you need cut.

Note: For example, enter a quantity of 200 for a cut product and that will default in as the cut length in Cut Product. This saves time at Order Entry. You can change the number of cuts and/or the length on invoiced generations, if authorized to edit closed orders.

The system checks that the product is set up as cuttable and then either displays the Cut Product Entry window or you will continue to enter product in the body of the sales order. To restrict how a cut product should be handled at a branch, see Maintaining Cut Products by Branch.

  1. ClosedVerify and update the columns, as needed, to indicate how to cut the product. Enter each different cut on an order as a new line item.

Note: Use the Change View menu to display columns not in the default view. Use User-Defined View Maintenance to adjust your column view, as needed.

    Column

    Description

    Select

Select the line items if you need to procure items. Otherwise, leave these deselected.

    # of Cuts

Indicate the number of cuts you need of the total length.

For example, you need 200 feet of electrical wire cut into 50 foot lengths. Enter 4.

Note:If you change the number of cuts later, the system adds a comment to the order so the total number of cuts are displayed. These comments are not generation specific.

    Length

Enter the length of each cut in the Cuts field.

For example, you need 200 feet of electrical wire cut into 50 foot lengths. Enter 50.

    UM

(View Only) The unit of measure by which you measure the Length field value, such as feet or yards, based on the setting in Product Maintenance.

Note: If you change the Cuts or Length fields, the system updates the order, but displays an error if the values for the Unit of Measure do not match the Product Maintenance UM information.

    Product Description

Displays the description listed in the product record as entered in the body of the order. You can change the product from this field, if needed.

The cut product description is carried to a transfer order if a transfer is required for fulfilling the sales order.

    Location

From the View > Change View menu, select Location/Lot to display the this column. Use the Location column if you want to set the location in advance. By default, there is no location selection when the order is set to Open.

The system assigns a location based on your settings in Location Maintenance when the order advances to In Process. The location displays in the Cut Product Queue.

    Group

From the View > Change View menu, select Group/Unit Price to display this column.

The groups defaults based on the default group defined for the branch. Change the cuttable product group for the line item, if needed.

Note: Parallel cut line items with different cuts and lengths of the same product must have different groups assigned.

    Stack

Use the Stack column if you want to define parallel cuts that are stacked. Use this field when you have one parallel reel with multiple levels of wire stacked on top of each other and has a divider to separate the wire.

    Unit Price

From the View > Change View menu, select Group/Unit Price to display this column.

Change the price per unit of measure, if needed, for the cut product line item.

    Unit Cost

From the View > Change View menu, select Group/Unit Cost to display this column.

Change the cost per unit of measure, if needed, for the cut product line item.

    Unit COGS

From the View > Change View menu, select Group/Unit COGS to display this column.

Change the cost of goods per unit of measure, if needed, for the cut product line item.

    GP%

From the View > Change View menu, select Group/Unit CostorGroup/Unit COGS to display this column.

Update the gross profit percentage for the line item, if needed.

Note:The system does not check the Minimum Sell Quantity value if a product is scheduled for cutting.

  2. Apply cut charges, cut reel options, or stack options, as required for the order.

  3. Add any additional cuttable products that you want to add to the order.

Enter each different cut on an order as a new line item. For example, in addition to the cuts listed above you want to add a 1 @ 100 cut. Enter this cut on a new line on the Cut Product Entry window.

Note: If you add the same line item in a parallel group with different cuts or lengths, the system prompts you to either fix the values or create a duplicate group.

  1. Save your changes and exit the window to return to the body of the order.

Note:An indicator on the status bar at the bottom of the order displays for the cuttable line item. The indicator only displays when you select that line item. Double-click this icon to access the Cut Product Entry window.

  1. Add additional products to the order, if needed.

  1. Save your changes and exit the window.

Create New or Duplicate Cut Groups in Sales Order Entry

Under the Edit menus, in the Cut Entry screen you can select one of these two options:

Either option only creates the groups for the order that you are in. This allows you to only create a minimum amount of cut group and create any new ones on the fly in order entry.

This option will also copy all the options associate with that group but will not auto-select any options.

This option will also copy all the options associate with that group and everything that was previously selected.
